Department of Sociology

Sociology is a theoretical and empirical foundation for understanding the development, structure and function of human society. Sociology, as a scientific discipline, explains the major trends in society and the ways in which social structure and institutions such as family, class, community and power influence our society. Sociologists are interested in understanding social phenomena such as causes and consequences of social inequality, the impact of groups on individual, the causes of social, economic and political change, the sources of values and beliefs; and organization of major institutions. Sociology deepens and broadens the student’s capacity to think sociologically and critically about modern society, current social issues and problems as well as to address the socio-economic and crucial issues by employing scientific methodology and special sociological expertise.

Sociologists observe the everyday experiences of people in groups and collectivities – ethnic, professionals, workers, gangs, families and seek to explain them with scientific sociological insight. Sociologists are interested in understanding the complex nature of human interaction on the societal level, relationships among people and how they affect the way we live.  Contemporary society is becoming increasingly sophisticated but also more complex. Therefore, the challenge of understanding the intricate ways in which societies work, is growing intense.

Sociology is driving force and major determinant of social development for every society. Sociology provides a sound basis for wide range career and professions in public administration, social services, criminal justice systems, academic institutions, various public and private institutions.

Realizing the demand and significance of this popular social science, the University of Swabi took an initiative to establish the Department of Sociology in October, 2013.

Research is the basic hallmark of the Department of Sociology. Apart from strong training in sociological theory, research activities are made obligatory for Master’s student to make them skilled in the translation of sociological research investigations into practical research design. Students are given exposure to community engagement activities in various areas in the form of field work, as a compulsory part of their program.

The Department, currently, offers a comprehensive and innovative Master degree in the field of Sociology and intends to start BS program in the near future. Master Program in Sociology has been structured as combination of training in sociological theory, research and field work. New students are enrolled in ‘Master of Arts in Sociology’ for Fall Semester.
